This Grade 1 cursive handwriting worksheet provides a comprehensive approach to mastering the letter T. Students engage in visual discrimination to identify the letter among distractors before transitioning to precise motor control through tracing and independent writing. It bridges the gap between letter recognition and fluent cursive production.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.A— Print all upper- and lowercase letters accurately and fluently- Skill Focus: Cursive Letter T Formation
- Format: 1 page · 30 tasks · Answer key included · PDF
- Best For: Morning work or handwriting centers
- Time: 10–15 minutes
The worksheet features three distinct zones. First, a "letter soup" contains 20 characters where students must circle both uppercase and lowercase T. Second, a vocabulary section reinforces phonics with four illustrated words: Tulip, Tortoise, Tooth, and Teapot. Finally, a dedicated tracing area provides 6 guided cursive Tt pairs followed by a blank line for independent practice.
This resource is designed for immediate classroom implementation with a total teacher prep time of under 2 minutes. Simply print the single-page PDF (30 seconds), distribute to students during your handwriting block (30 seconds), and review the letter search results as a whole group (1 minute). It serves as an ideal sub plan or quiet morning activity.
Aligned to CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.A, which requires students to "Print all upper- and lowercase letters." While the standard specifies printing, cursive instruction in Grade 1 supports the fine motor development necessary for all written communication. This standard code can be copied directly into lesson plans, IEP goals, or district curriculum mapping tools.
Use this worksheet during the independent practice phase of a lesson. After demonstrating the cursive T stroke on the board, assign this for student work. For formative assessment, observe the directionality of student strokes during the tracing phase to ensure they are not forming the letters backward. Completion typically takes 12 minutes.
This resource is perfect for first-grade students beginning their cursive journey or kindergarteners showing advanced fine motor readiness. It pairs naturally with an alphabet anchor chart or a direct instruction lesson on the "swing up" stroke used in cursive T. The visual cues help English Language Learners connect the letter sound to familiar objects.
According to Fisher & Frey (2014), the gradual release of responsibility is most effective when students move from guided recognition to independent production. This worksheet follows that pedagogical path by requiring students to first identify the cursive Letter T among other characters before attempting the physical formation. Research from the NAEP suggests that early fluency in handwriting, including cursive, correlates with better compositional quality in later elementary years because it reduces the cognitive load associated with letter retrieval. By integrating phonics-based vocabulary (Tulip, Tortoise) with motor tasks, this resource reinforces the orthographic mapping required for literacy. The inclusion of 30 total tasks ensures sufficient repetition for muscle memory without causing student fatigue. This structured approach to CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.A provides the necessary scaffolding for Grade 1 learners to achieve mastery in letter formation and recognition.
